Japan plans to increase the supply of domestic timber by 35% by 2030

on June 15, the Japanese government decided on the basic plan of Japanese forest and Forestry at the cabinet meeting on June 15. By 2030, the supply of domestic timber in Japan will increase to 42 million cubic meters, an increase of 35% over 2019.

The plan includes replanting saplings in the open space after logging timber and expanding the use of timber in buildings to increase the absorption of greenhouse gases, to promote Japan's decarburization goal in 2020.

The Japanese government has proposed the goal of achieving net zero emission of greenhouse gases by 2050. In 2019, the carbon dioxide absorption of forests accounted for more than 90% of Japan's total absorption. Under the condition of decreasing forestry personnel, in order to maintain the level of afforestation, the Japanese government will also promote large-scale intensification of operation.

Another goal of the Japanese government is to strengthen the stable supply system of domestic timber. In 2019, the proportion of domestic timber used in Japan in the total demand of building timber was less than half. By 2030, the proportion of domestic timber in Japan will increase to more than 60%.
